About this book
Messages hidden in a swan's feathers carry the hopes of lovers in these French romances. In the tale of Milon, a knight returns home to learn that the woman he loves has married a baron. He sends a letter concealed on a swan, entrusting its delivery to his squire. Inside the castle, the bird passes through a household of porters, attendants and a lady who weeps over the message beneath its feathers.
The collection brings tales associated with Marie de France into English, presenting love within the customs and constraints of medieval life. Its introduction also considers the difficulties faced by women who sought a public voice as writers. Courtly manners and practical schemes sit beside declarations of longing, making the stories useful to readers interested in how old romances give private feelings a place amid rank, duty and household scrutiny.
