About this book
The Princess De Montpensier is by Madame de La Fayette. An introduction says the story was published anonymously in 1662 and is set in a period almost 100 years previously, during the sanguinary wars of the counter-reformation. The introduction adds that many of the persons who are involved in the tale actually existed, and that the events referred to actually took place.
The only daughter of the Marquis of Mézières, a very considerable heiress, was promised in marriage to the Duc de Maine, the younger brother of the Duc de Guise, while the civil war of religion was tearing France apart. The Duc de Guise, the elder of the brothers, falls in love and is loved in return. The King puts on a ballet in which Madame and all the princesses are to dance, and among them only the Princess de Montpensier could rival Madame in beauty. The Princess is seriously ill, seized by a violent fever as soon as her women had put her to bed.
