About this book
Photographs from Spirit and Opportunity give this collection its focus: Mars seen through combinations of the rovers' filtered camera images. Bob Webster explains how he merged separate exposures into color pictures and why the results depend on filter choice, camera calibration and the angle of sunlight. Even the time between exposures can matter, allowing a moving shadow to leave a colored edge.
The dated image sections include captions about rock surfaces, dust and the small round grains nicknamed "blueberries." Opportunity's work at Eagle Crater and Spirit's examination of the rock called Mazatzal connect the pictures with questions about minerals and the planet's past. Readers interested in space photography can use the accompanying explanation to understand how these views were made and why different combinations can change the appearance of the same scene.
