About this book

The dedication calls Commodore Paul Jones, by Cyrus Townsend Brady, a story of the life of one of the great founders of the Republic. The preface says the writer began, he admits, with an ardent admiration for John Paul Jones, born of long study of his career, and conscientiously went over the immense mass of material bearing upon him. The text says that on the 7th of December, 1775, Jones was appointed a lieutenant in the new Continental navy.

A speaker in the text says he is informed that Captain Cunningham, who bears a senior rank in the service of America than the addressee’s in the service of England, is now confined at Plymouth in a dungeon and in fetters. The writer sees a great life that might have been greater, a man of noble qualities marred by petty faults, and says that his exploits shall live forever in the minds of his countrymen.
