About this book
Fresh from a western coeducational college, Belinda expects to make her living as a teacher after her family's finances decline. Her work in an Indiana public school leads to an offer from Lucilla Ryder: teach English at the Select School for Young Ladies that Lucilla runs with her sister Emmeline in New York. A tiny bedroom and a small salary come with the position, along with an education in the habits of wealthy pupils and their ambitious parents.
Eleanor Hoyt Brainerd presents humorous sketches of boarding school life. The Ryder sisters trade on social connections, while their pupils turn overheard talk into romantic speculation. When Amelia Bowers hears a story about Katharine Holland through the maid Norah, she passes it to Laura May Lee and Kittie Dayton under promises of secrecy. Their eagerness to imagine a broken heart shows how quickly a school rumor can grow into an elaborate imagined romance.
