About this book
Edmondo De Amicis wrote Constantinople, V. 1. The contents list names chapters, among others, The Arrival, The Bridge and St. Sophia. The text calls the central dome the great marvel of the mosque, and says that gazing up at it from the middle of the nave it truly seems, as Mme. de Staël said of the dome of St. Peter's, as though a vast abyss were suspended over one's head.
Two huge alabaster jars stand on either side of an entrance, the text says, found among the ruins of Pergamum and brought to Constantinople by Murad III. The text describes a view in which, on the opposite bank, lie Stambul, the aqueduct of Valens, the great mosques of Muhammad and Suleiman, and innumerable houses and minarets. The text says the Armenians are hard not only to study intimately but even to distinguish at sight.
