About this book

Sea light, narrow streets and ancient buildings shape Robert Hichens's account of Dalmatia, Greece and Constantinople. The opening follows a ship along the Adriatic, past Pola and its Roman amphitheater, toward Zara. Hichens lingers over bells, waterfront houses, market costumes and the mingling of Italian and Slavonic speech. His descriptions make the sights and sounds of each place as prominent as its monuments.

The volume's 1913 title page credits illustrations by Jules Guérin and photographs, while its chapters extend to Athens, Delphi, Olympia and the mosques of Constantinople. At Cape Sunium, the narrator meets a temple guardian who has returned from industrial work in Pittsburgh after losing an arm. Such encounters bring individual lives into the scenic writing. Read today, the book offers a period traveler's view of these places, with close attention to color, architecture and the feelings a landscape can provoke.

About the author

Robert Hichens

Robert Smythe Hichens (1864–1950) was an English novelist, journalist, and music critic who first drew notice as a satirist of the 1890s. His anonymously published novel "The Green Carnation" (1894) lampooned Oscar Wilde and Lord Alfred Douglas so pointedly that it was withdrawn during Wilde's trial.
