About this book
Mary Greer Conklin wrote Conversation, a book with the subtitle What to Say and How to Say It. The preface quotes Dr. Johnson telling Boswell of the best book that was ever written upon good breeding. The contents list chapters headed What Should Guests Talk About at Dinner? and Talk of Host and Hostess at Dinner. The contents also give a chapter on interruption in conversation, summarised as its deadening effect on conversation.
The summary of one chapter names the essential difference between slander and innocent gossip. Henry Thomas Buckle is quoted as saying that men and women range themselves into three classes or orders of intelligence. The text says discussion is the most delightful of all conversation, if the company are up to it.
