About this book

The Training of a Public Speaker is a book by Grenville Kleiser. The contents list, among others, gives chapters called "Rhetoric and Eloquence", "The Exordium or Introduction" and "The Study of Words". The preface says the power of eloquence to move and persuade men is universally recognized.

The book quotes definitions of rhetoric, among them "Power of persuading by speaking" and "The power of inventing whatever is persuasive in a discourse". Under the heading "THE DANGER OF VERBIAGE", the book says simplicity, the language of truth, is an oration's greatest ornament, and affectation the reverse. The book asks of what significance is the custom, kept up by many, of declaiming so many years in schools and of expending so much labor on imaginary subjects.
