About this book
The Haunted and the Haunters, subtitled Or, The House and the Brain, is by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The story's speaker says that a friend of his, who is a man of letters and a philosopher, told him, “I have discovered a haunted house in the midst of London.” A house in the story is described as situated on the north side of Oxford Street, in a dull but respectable thoroughfare.
A beer-boy collecting pewter pots tells the speaker, “The house is haunted; and the old woman who kept it was found dead in her bed, with her eyes wide open.” A speaker in the story says he strove to speak, that “my voice utterly failed me,” and that he felt as if weighed down by an irresistible force. A group in the story finds a miniature portrait set in gold in one of the drawers, a portrait of a man who might be somewhat advanced in middle life, perhaps forty-seven or forty-eight.
