About this book
Coronation Anecdotes, by Giles Gossip, is described as select and interesting fragments of English coronation ceremonies. The advertisement says the coronation of our monarchs presents a wide field of meditation to an intelligent eye. The text says that St. Thomas à Becket received, according to a MS. in the Cotton Library, from our Lady's own hands, at Sens, in France, a golden eagle and a small phial of stone or glass containing an unction, and that Henry IV. is said to be the first prince anointed with these vessels.
A prayer given for a queen asks Almighty and everlasting God to pour out, of his abundant goodness, the spirit of his grace and blessing upon his servant. A scene at a door has the queen, asked for her ticket, reply that she had none and, as Queen of England, needed none, while the man who asked professes sorrow but says he must obey orders.
