About this book
This is J. A. Giles's edition of William of Malmesbury's "Chronicle of the Kings of England", subtitled "From the Earliest Period to the Reign of King Stephen", with notes and illustrations, dated London, 1847. A transcriber's note explains that the timeline in the page headers is shown as sidenotes in the form "[A.D. year]". The editor's preface opens with Archbishop Usher calling William "the chief of our historians".
In one passage a banished king in retreat on an island is told in his sleep by Cuthbert, formerly bishop of Lindisfarne, that his fishers will bring home many large fish although the river is frozen. Another passage describes the men going to the sepulchre of the Lord in prayer, and says that no one could describe their repentant tears. A third passage reports a day on which the Angles defeated the Britons, after which the king governed for eight years.
