About this book
The title page of The Principal Speeches and Addresses of His Royal Highness the Prince Consort says the volume comes with an introduction giving some outlines of his character. The contents list, among others, a speech at a meeting for the abolition of slavery, a speech at the Literary Fund dinner and a speech at a meeting of the Corporation of the Trinity House. One speech says that, should they succeed in inducing the public at large to consider all these points, they will have the satisfaction of having furthered the interests of a class recorded in the Report of the last Census as the most numerous in the British population.
A speech dated June 11th, 1849, at the entertainment given by the Merchant Tailors’ Company has the speaker thank the gentlemen sincerely for their expressions of kindness and cordiality. One speech says of certain schools, struggling from the most lowly and humble beginnings up to their present noble dimensions, that in them we find a striking exemplification of the Divine truth that the principle of good once sown is not destined to lie dormant.
