The Critical Examination of the Life of St Paul presents the scepticism of Peter Annet (1693-1769), the boldest of the English deists, applied to the apostle’s career and conversion. Building on the question he pressed in The Resurrection of Jesus Considered, Annet weighs the Damascus road account and Paul’s authority as evidence rather than revelation, a method shocking to his century. The English text is associated with material later taken up by the French philosophes, and Voltaire’s circle knew the arguments well. It remains a landmark of eighteenth-century biblical criticism.
