The Miraculous Conception is a freethinking tract by Peter Annet (1693-1769), the English deist schoolmaster who carried Enlightenment criticism of the Bible further than any English writer of his generation. Annet subjects the nativity narratives to the sceptical cross-examination he applied throughout his pamphlets, asking what evidence would satisfy an impartial inquirer. He paid for his boldness: at nearly seventy he was pilloried and imprisoned for blasphemy over his Free Enquirer papers. His tracts are primary documents of the radical English Enlightenment.
