About this book

Critical Miscellanies (Vol. 2 of 3) includes, as Essay 3, an essay on Condorcet by John Morley. The essay says that, until the outbreak of the Revolution, the circumstances of Condorcet’s life were as little externally disturbed or specially remarkable as those of any other geometer and thinker of the time. According to the essay, its subject was born at a small town in Picardy, in the year 1743.

The essay says that the father of its subject was a cavalry officer who died when his son was only three years old. The essay says that the mother dedicated her child to the Holy Virgin and for eight years or more made him wear the dress of a little girl. The contents list names, among others, Friendship with Voltaire and with Turgot and His view of the two English Revolutions.
