About this book
The essay is an address delivered at the Town Hall, Birmingham (October 5, 1876), on popular culture. The contents list names, among others, the importance of provincial centres, the report of the Midland Institute and the success of the French classes. The speaker says that we can only be sure of advancing all kinds of knowledge, and developing our national life in all its plenitude and variety, on condition of multiplying local centres of secondary and higher education.
The speaker says that one of the branches of the trades in the town is the manufacture of jewellery, and that a craftsman who wants to profit by the admirable models of the national collection must go to London. The speaker says that the application of scientific method and conception to society is yet in its infancy. The speaker adds that, if the rules of evidence and proof are to be taught at all, they must be taught with illustrations that convey their own direct reference and application to practical life.
