About this book
Written in 1912 by Alva Agee, then head of agricultural extension at the Pennsylvania State College, this practical guide sets out how a farmer can make tired land productive again and keep it that way. Agee writes for the working owner who expects the soil to pay, and he says plainly that farming which leads into debt is poor farming, however well the land may do.
The chapters move through lime and soil acidity, with a simple litmus-paper test, then the clovers, alfalfa, grass sods, pastures, the cowpea, the soybean and cereal catch crops. Later sections cover stable manure and how to save its value, crop rotations, commercial fertilizers, home-mixing of plant-food, tillage, the control of soil moisture and the laying of drain tile.
Photographs of farms in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and West Virginia show the methods at work. Gardeners and small growers interested in cover crops, liming and building organic matter will find the reasoning clear, and the book offers a close view of American farm practice before chemical farming took hold.
