About this book
The First Book of Farming is by Charles L. Goodrich, farmer and expert in the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture. The preface says the most successful farmers of the present day are those who work in harmony with the forces and laws of nature which control the growth and development of plants and animals. The preface hopes the book may be of assistance to farmers, students and teachers, in their search for the fundamental truths.
A walk around a farm finds, in the barn and sheds, wagons, plows, harrows, seed drills, hoes, rakes, scythes and many other tools and machines. The text says buds and leaves or buds and leaf scars distinguish stems from roots, and that some plants have stems under the soil as well as above it.
