About this book
Right Use of Lime in Soil Improvement is by Alva Agee, Secretary of the New Jersey State Department of Agriculture. The contents list chapters on Evidences of Acidity, Tests for Acidity, Storing Lime in the Soil, Fresh Burned Lime and Amount of Lime per Acre. The author says that lime cannot take the place of nitrogen, nor phosphorus, nor any other of the essential plant foods.
The author says the obvious need of the soils is the rich organic matter that clover and grass sods could furnish, and their fundamental need is lime. Burning the stone does not affect the ability to correct acidity, but it does increase the power to make a stiff soil friable and to bind a sandy soil. Mixing four tons of limestone per acre thoroughly with the soil is called good practice, and a caption notes the remarkable effect of lime on Sweet Clover at the Ohio Experiment Station.
