About this book
Curiosities of Human Nature is a book by Samuel G. Goodrich. The contents list names, among others, Zerah Colburn, Baratiere, Gassendi, Pascal and Grotius.
Young Colburn had spent two years and nine months at the Westminster seminary, where his progress in the acquisition of languages and other studies was extremely rapid. The text calls it a curious fact that while the boy was fascinated with arithmetical calculations, his taste revolted from the abstruser portions of mathematics as a pursuit that was dry and repulsive. During the Creek war in Tennessee, in 1812, Crockett served as a private soldier under General Jackson, according to the text. At Shoal Creek, settlers living apart from the rest of the world set up a government for themselves and established certain laws, and Crockett was elected one of the magistrates.
