About this book
Curiosities of Medical Experience examines inherited bodily peculiarities alongside accounts of medical practice and religious institutions involved in healing. The discussion of family traits records Mr. Carlisle's report of extra fingers and toes across four generations, introduced by a woman with six fingers on each hand. The account describes descendants with a mixture of ordinary limbs and additional fingers or toes, including twins who differed in this respect.
The history of medical practice describes an edict prohibiting people under religious vows from studying medicine or law. The account of healing records says temple walls in Egypt carried observations of cures and that the priests treated these records as their property. The discussion also reports the belief among the Hebrews that only the Levites could cure leprosy.
