About this book
Medical ideas pass from ancient healing traditions to anatomy, chemistry and disease prevention in William Osler's lectures, delivered at Yale in April 1913. The contents move through Egyptian, Greek and medieval medicine before turning to the Renaissance and modern scientific developments. Hippocrates, Galen, Vesalius and Harvey appear within this broad historical framework, which places changing knowledge of the body alongside the institutions that preserved and taught it.
A closer view of medieval surgery brings Henri de Mondeville and Guy de Chauliac into focus. Osler discusses their debts to Arabic medical writers, their practical experience and the qualities they thought a surgeon needed. References to manuscripts, printed editions and theories of the bodily humors show how medical learning circulated across generations. Readers interested in the history of healthcare can follow both the persistence of inherited explanations and the value placed on observation and skilled practice.
