About this book
Medieval Medicine is by James J. Walsh. The text says certain members of an Arabian family with the title Bachtischua, a name derived from the Arabic words Bocht Jesu, that is, servant of Jesus, were called to the Court of Haroun al-Raschid and introduced Greek medicine to the Mohammedans. The text says the next important phase of medicine and surgery in the Middle Ages developed in the southern part of Italy at Salerno.
A quotation in the text says that the perfect surgeon is more than the perfect physician, and that while he must know medicine he must in addition know his handicraft. The text says Guy de Chauliac, the other great French surgeon of the fourteenth century, well deserves the name of father of modern surgery. A list of entries includes, among others, the Ebers Papyrus, the characters of medieval education and the Four masters of Salerno.
