About this book
The narrator opens on a winter night in the city of Ohio, 1837, and leads an imagined visitor into a modest house where a young mother sleeps beside her child's cradle. A fire starts within a few lines, neighbors rush out calling for buckets, and the burning house answers with a strange knocking sound.
The telling is jokey and rough-edged, even as the danger grows.
