Cymbeline
Imogen, the daughter of Britain’s King Cymbeline, secretly marries the man she loves against her father’s will, and her husband is banished for it. In exile he is tricked into a cruel wager on her faithfulness by the scheming Iachimo, setting off a chain of jealousy, disguise, and near-murder that ranges from the British court to the mountains of Wales and a war with Rome. Shakespeare wrote this late romance around 1610, weaving together lost princes, a wicked queen, and a heroine who spends much of the play disguised as a boy. Its tangled plot resolves in a famous cascade of revelations, and it shares the strange, forgiving mood of his other last plays. Free to read as a PDF and EPUB edition.
