About this book

Before England's claim to France becomes a military question, two churchmen worry about a bill that threatens their lands. Canterbury praises Henry's transformation from a wayward prince into a thoughtful ruler, then explains the ancestry and inheritance laws behind his claim to the French crown. Henry presses him to consider the lives that war will cost. The opening places religious authority, political interest and royal conscience in the same room.

The scene later shifts to the English camp at Agincourt, where weary soldiers face the coming battle. A chorus asks the audience to imagine armies beyond the stage's resources, while Henry moves among his men and borrows a cloak for time alone. His encounter with Pistol brings ordinary speech beside royal ceremony. This verse drama offers readers a close look at leadership under pressure, and at the language used to justify conflict and sustain courage.
