About this book

Dave Dawson at Dunkirk is a book by R. Sidney Bowen. The contents list names, among others, "Prisoners of War!", "Escape!" and "The White Cliffs!".

The first thing Dave Dawson sees when he wakes up is the combination clock and calendar on the little table beside his bed. Lieutenant Defoe tells Dave that his father had to leave for London at once after a wireless message arrived, and that an Embassy car took him to Calais where he could embark on a destroyer. A small but speedy Renault car scoots along the broad dusty French road like a grey-brown bug fleeing for its life. Freddy, in a bomb crater, calls up that he is not hurt a bit, but the blasted safety harness broke and he is in a beastly puddle of mud. A Heinkel bomber outlined in livid flame is engulfed and comes hurtling down to hit the water off-shore, and the watchers see British Hurricanes.
