About this book

French and English carries the subtitle "A Story of the Struggle in America". The contents list, among others, books called Border Warfare, Roger's Rangers and Within Quebec. One passage says that Humphrey had never known what awful loneliness could engulf the human spirit till he sat beside the fevered man in the vast solitude of the primeval forest.

A passage has Humphrey outside for a breath of fresh air at the hour of sundown. In another passage Julian and Humphrey find themselves in boats alongside each other, and Humphrey was an Ensign while Julian had been made a Lieutenant. In another passage a speaker asks, "How came you here? Surely Quebec is not taken yet!" and gets the reply "No, but so nearly taken that we thought to steal a march."
