About this book

Miriam Henderson seeks company in the Baileys' boardinghouse when her thoughts become too lively for the privacy of her room. Downstairs, a quiet conversation between Mrs. Bailey and Mr. Gunner unsettles her plans for a cheerful evening. Their smiles, the dim gaslight and a stopped clock all become material for her shifting impressions. This novel follows the movement of her attention, showing how an ordinary encounter can change her understanding of other people and of her own place among them.

A later conversation brings out another side of the house as Miriam recalls a bicycle accident and the care she received from its residents. Memories of kindness mingle with questions about responsibility and judgment. Richardson gives everyday speech and inward reflection equal weight, letting small social exchanges open into larger concerns. Readers interested in closely observed inner life will find a woman testing the phrases, assumptions and feelings through which she makes sense of experience.

About the author

Dorothy M. Richardson

Dorothy M. Richardson (1873-1957) was an English novelist and journalist regarded as a pioneer of stream-of-consciousness fiction.
