About this book

In the third volume of Pilgrimage, Miriam Henderson leaves teaching to become governess to the wealthy Corrie family, and for a while she is dazzled by a life of comfort she has never known: fine houses, servants, dinner parties, and the ease of people who never worry about money. Yet the closer she looks, the more hollow that world begins to feel, and her hunger for a life truly her own only grows. Dorothy Richardson renders it all through Miriam's flickering thoughts, then closes the book with a family sorrow that lands with quiet force. This free PDF and EPUB edition carries forward a novel sequence that put the inner life of an ordinary woman at the very center of modern fiction.

About the author

Dorothy M. Richardson

Dorothy M. Richardson (1873-1957) was an English novelist and journalist regarded as a pioneer of stream-of-consciousness fiction. Her thirteen-volume sequence Pilgrimage, written over decades, followed a single woman's inner life and influenced modernists such as Virginia Woolf, though it long remained underread.
