About this book
Stranded near home by a snowdrift, Bessie Lambert treats a railway delay as an adventure. When the guard asks her to join a frightened young passenger, she readily moves into the warmer carriage. Their conversation sets Bessie's practical good humor against her companion's anxiety, while the contrast in their clothes introduces questions of money, appearances and social judgment.
Rosa Nouchette Carey's English novel gives everyday kindness and family duty a central place. A later letter from Bessie describes reading in the garden, watching pets, playing tennis and driving with Edna to visit an elderly couple. Their memories of a daughter who died bring sorrow into these scenes of leisure. Bessie's determination to keep writing home adds another measure of her care for others. Readers drawn to domestic fiction will find character revealed through small exchanges, personal letters and differing ways of responding to trouble.
