About this book

Thirty-one short chapters make up this essay by Maurice Maeterlinck on what people mean by death and whether they have reason to fear it. He argues that the pains of dying and the horrors of the grave do not belong to death itself, sets aside religious fears, and then asks whether consciousness survives, and what infinity could mean to reason and to the senses. Alexander Teixeira de Mattos made the translation, printed in New York in 1912. The Belgian author won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911.
