About this book
The work is titled Gleanings from Maeterlinck. A passage that reviews the theories the writer has expounded says it seems difficult not to welcome the assurance found at the bottom of every one of them, that infinity could not be malevolent. The text adds that we have not only to resign ourselves to living in the incomprehensible, but to rejoice that we cannot go out of it.
The text says that if there were no more insoluble questions nor impenetrable riddles, infinity would not be infinite. A passage urges “Try then to recall those whom you have lost, before it is too late, before they have gone too far,” and says they “care for nothing now but to smile upon us, to encompass us with love.” Whatever the ultimate truth may be, the text says it behoves us above all to foresee in infinity our fate, which in either case must end by absorption in that very infinity.
