The opening lines of Death Wish say that, compared with a spaceship in distress, going to hell in a handbasket is roomy and slow. The space freighter Queen Dierdre is described as a great, squat, pockmarked vessel of the Earth-Mars run that never gave anyone a bit of trouble. Mr. Watkins, her engineer, is short and red-faced, magnificently mustached, and always a little out of breath.
Captain Somers frowns and studies his complex control board as soon as Point Able has been reached and the engines have stopped. Somers takes the microphone and states their situation, and a company official at the other end seems to have trouble grasping it. Somers tells Rajcik that the computer agrees with his figure of a few thousand years to return to the Solar System, twenty-three hundred years to be precise.
