About this book
William Holden Hutton’s Constantinople presents an account of the old capital of the empire, taking the city itself as the subject of its story. The account of the walls acknowledges that their line is difficult to trace with certainty, proposing only a probable route between the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmora. The description of Constantine’s municipal government identifies fourteen regions, including two outside the walls, and names those outlying divisions as Sycae and Blachernae.
The account of Mohammed says that the city had become populous and prosperous again before his death. The discussion of the Hippodrome records the removal of the bronze horses of Lysippus to Venice after the Latin Conquest.
