About this book

In a lodging house behind Bloomsbury, Peter and Flossy take charge of a baby whose parents have died. Their mother depends on paying lodgers who expect quiet, so keeping the little newcomer happy becomes an urgent household task. With help from Snip-snap, their patient terrier, the children sing, invent games and turn the attic nursery into the centre of their lives.

L. T. Meade follows this affectionate arrangement into a harder test of the children's judgment. A later scene finds them searching the streets for somewhere to stay with Dickory, as rain and illness make their plans increasingly desperate. The story brings the warmth of family attachment up against the practical needs of a small child. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find a novel about responsibility, limited means and the distance between loving intentions and dependable care.
