About this book

A painful hand threatens the livelihood of Patience Reed, a sixty-eight-year-old needlewoman supporting six orphaned grandchildren in London's Whitechapel. At the hospital, a doctor tells her to stop sewing, putting the family's security at risk. Grannie has long earned their keep through fine work for West End shops, and her cheerful confidence faces a practical test as pain interrupts the work on which they depend.

L. T. Meade's novel for young readers follows a household trying to meet hardship through work, affection and help from others. Alison, the eldest granddaughter, searches for employment while Grannie worries about the younger children and plans to ask a trusted clergyman for advice. Domestic details, from a potato pie at dinner to unfinished feather-stitching, give the financial trouble a close, everyday scale. The story offers a portrait of family responsibility and the fragile value of skilled handwork.
