About this book
Butterflies and Moths (British) is a work by William S. Furneaux. The text says the various species of butterflies and moths are distinguished mainly by the arrangement and colour of the markings of their wings, so it is really necessary to know the names of the different parts of these organs. The writer says he has inserted drawings of a fore and of a hind wing of a butterfly, together with the names of the various parts of the wings.
Athalia is described as a local butterfly, sometimes found in abundance in the spots which it frequents and met with chiefly in the open spaces of woods along the south coast and for some distance inland. Devon, Cornwall, Sussex, and Kent seem to be the most favoured counties. A list headed Family Geometridæ gives names such as Golden-bordered Purple (Muricata) and Waved Carpet (Sylvata).
