About this book

John B. Smith, professor of entomology at Rutgers College, prepared this alphabetical list of entomological terms, dated 1906 on its title page. Each entry gives a word and its meaning, often naming the group of insects it applies to: alar frenum in Hymenoptera, lower fronto-orbital bristles in Diptera, the lower radial vein in Lepidoptera, and the hairy-winged Trichoptera.

Some entries cover general biology, such as albinism, the alimentary canal and air-sacs. Others describe regions of North America, among them the Alleghanian and Lower Sonoran faunal areas, with the states they take in. Terms for colour such as albidus, white with a dusky tinge, sit beside structures such as the alitrunk, the part of the thorax to which the wings are attached. Some entries send the reader to another with q.v.
