About this book

Ancient inscriptions and the daily demands of travel share the page in Austen Henry Layard's account of his second expedition for the British Museum. This 1853 abridgment of Discoveries Among the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon describes excavations, palace sculptures, clay tablets, and work on deciphering cuneiform. Layard credits fellow researchers and discusses how inscriptions can be compared with historical and biblical records.

The account also follows routes through Armenia, Kurdistan, and the desert. A ride from Kouyunjik leads across plains and rocky ground to Akra, where illness delays the party. Layard uses the pause to inspect carved rock tablets near Gunduk. These shifts between archaeological finds and conditions on the road give readers a view of nineteenth-century fieldwork, including the observations, uncertainty, and personal circumstances behind its written record.
