About this book

The title presents travels above the second cataract of the Nile, describing the country and its inhabitants under Mohammed Ali and the antiquities, arts and history of Meroe. The title promises a map and ninety illustrations of temples and pyramids, made from drawings finished on the spot by the author and an employed artist. The traveller states that Meroe is the object of the journey and seeks to elucidate the surviving traces of the ancient grandeur of the kingdom of Ethiopia.

The traveller disclaims any idea of adding much to geographical knowledge of the interior of Africa, while hoping to return with strictly accurate drawings and plans. The account records an arrival at Esneh in the morning and a wish to obtain a letter from the Governor requesting help in procuring camels. The description of the Benigerar says they have many horses and camels, generally transport merchandise, sometimes to Darfour, and are often at war with the Kababysh.
