About this book
Robert Routledge's Discoveries and Inventions of the Nineteenth Century includes a poem by Emerson about coal, steam and the galvanic wire, and goes on to describe the machines and materials of its title. The pages carry plates and numbered figures, and the text gives working measurements.
One passage describes a large ship with paddle-wheels 56 ft. in diameter, a four-bladed screw-propeller of 24 ft. and room for 4,000 passengers. Another explains how a house can be lit by a dynamo driven by a gas engine and working into accumulators, and how electric mains, thick insulated copper wires, are laid in iron pipes beneath the pavement like gas mains. A passage on iron sets out grey, white and mottled cast iron by how the carbon is combined and how each one behaves.
