About this book

Beacon fires, relays of runners, and signals from tower to tower introduce the problem of communicating over distance in this 1917 history of technology. Walter Kellogg Towers follows these early methods with chapters on electrical telegraphy, the Atlantic cable, and the growth of telephone networks. His account connects explanations of instruments with the lives of the people developing them, making technical change a matter of experiments, resources, and practical decisions.

The section on Alexander Graham Bell shows the pressure behind an invention. While he investigates ways to reproduce the action of the ear, his financial supporters urge him toward telegraph improvements. Joseph Henry, after examining Bell’s apparatus, encourages him to continue and acquire the knowledge he needs. Chapters on wireless communication extend the scope of the book. For readers today, it offers a period account of how familiar systems took shape through uncertain work and competing expectations.
