
This dissertation on the respect due to the medical profession comes from Worthington Hooker (1806-1867), the American physician and Yale professor who championed medical ethics and the public understanding of science. Hooker wrote the prize-winning Physician and Patient and worked to raise the standing and honesty of medicine. The dissertation argues for the dignity of the profession and the duties binding doctor and public. It is a document of nineteenth-century American medical ethics.
