About this book

A bowl of yellow tulips gives two very different girls their first point of agreement. Judy Jameson has come to live with her grandfather, a judge, who introduces her to Anne and hopes they will become friends. Anne's country home, her grandmother's simple lunch, a white cat and a tame crow provide the opening scene. Judy arrives finely dressed but weary, while Anne struggles to understand her visitor's sharp opinions and unfamiliar manners.

Temple Bailey's novel for young readers combines country life and family relationships with moments of danger. In a later passage, Judy's pearl necklace is taken during a visit to a roadside camp. She asserts herself when pressed to stay, then becomes lost while seeking help. The contrast between quiet domestic scenes and sudden uncertainty gives readers a story about friendship, confidence and the difficulties of finding one's footing in unfamiliar surroundings.
