About this book
Fidelle greets Minnie at the door, follows her through the garden and orchards, and waits at the window for her carriage to return. These small habits establish the affection between a little girl and her tortoiseshell cat in Madeline Leslie's children's story. When a visitor doubts that cats possess intelligence or feeling, Minnie's father turns to a book of animal anecdotes to answer her.
The household conversations open into accounts of cats caring for other animals and learning to ring bells for food. Minnie listens eagerly, defending her pet and responding to each example of feline resourcefulness. Domestic scenes and stories within the story give the book its rhythm. Readers interested in older animal fiction will find both observations of cat behavior and a clear concern with children's kindness toward living creatures.
