About this book
Drawing in Charcoal and Crayon for the Use of Students and Schools is by Frank Fowler. Among others, the contents name the chapters Charcoal and Crayon Drawing, Outfit Necessary for Charcoal and Crayon Drawing, and Elementary Practice under Part First. Part Second, in the contents, includes, among others, Manner of Working, Measurement, Actual and Comparative, and Crayon Portraits; Hair; Drapery; Backgrounds.
The explanation of Plate IV says the part drawn from the cast is laid in with charcoal, as in Fig. A., and then carried on in crayon as in Fig. B. The explanation of Plate V says the whole profile view of a face is given, Fig. A. representing the way to lay in a head. The text says the next step is to block in the shadows in their general forms, dividing the whole head into two distinct masses of light and shade. A section headed Landscape says charcoal is a favorite medium with many artists for landscape subjects, and, as before stated, especially useful in sketching from nature.
