About this book
Crayon portraiture by Jerome A. Barhydt gives "Complete Instructions for Making Crayon Portraits on Crayon Paper and on Platinum, Silver and Bromide Enlargements". The preface calls the work a second treatise on Crayon Portraiture, Liquid Water Colors and French Crystals, for the use of photographers and amateur artists.
The author writes, "I claim that any one who can learn to write can learn to draw, and that any one who can learn to draw can learn to make crayon portraits." Making portraits over a photograph, that is, an enlargement, is described as "a comparatively simple matter, as it does not require as much knowledge of drawing as do free-hand crayons." The directions for backgrounds name "two matters of importance": "do not have any small, hard pieces of crayon on the cotton when you rub it on the paper", and "use the fingers in as flat a position as possible". For work on a face in ink, the directions say to "Commence on the forehead with a very weak solution" and to continue over the whole face, "repeatedly working and cross hatching with lines until the face is dark enough".
