About this book

The title page reads East and West Poems. BY Bret Harte. The contents list A Greyport Legend, A Newport Romance and The Hawk's Nest under Part I, and Before the Curtain and The Stage-Driver's Story under Part II, among others. One poem speaks of the delicate odor of mignonette, the ghost of a dead and gone bouquet, as all that tells of her story.

A woman in one poem walks unbidden from room to room when the clock strikes two. Another poem says a day was lost that they should have kept, lost unheeded and lost unwept. A poem headed The Ritualist says that, as the speaker thinks, he wore a chasuble the day when first they met. One poem has a speaker saying he is not your grandmother, Riding-Hood, dear.
